It has won several awards it has never been out of print and it is Penguin Books’ best-selling novel of all time. The book has now sold more than 50 million copies worldwide. It was Richard Adams’s first novel and it was rejected by thirteen publishers before a small independent publisher, Rex Collings Ltd, decided that it was worth a gamble. The sale of the book coincides with the 40th anniversary of the publication of Watership Down in November 1972. Mr Adams’ signature was expected to have added up to £300 to its value. The book, which went under the hammer at Bloomsbury Auctions in London this week, is particularly valuable because it is a first edition copy in its original dustwrapper and is in excellent condition.
